Dispensing thermally conductive materials

The increased promotion of e-mobility has led to the areas of economics and research focusing more on the production of battery cells. They are not only decisive in all types of electric vehicle but also in daily life: from smartphones to smartwatches, and headphones and tools to domestic appliances such as robot vacuum cleaners. The demand for batteries has arisen accordingly.

Especially Asian countries have realised the potential of this technology, with China leading the way. However, European countries are catching up, also thanks to investments in research. On one hand, this means further development of the well-established lithium-ion batteries. They are to become more efficient, more durable, more economical and safer, but also more sustainable. However, on the other hand, research is also further developing new approaches: amongst others, the rare element lithium is to be replaced by sodium, magnesium or silicon.

The core of a lithium-ion battery is the battery cell. Each battery contains hundreds of these battery cells, which are in turn assembled into modules. In addition, it includes a cooling system, high-voltage connections, control and monitoring units as well as the housing. To protect the batteries from excessive heat, thermally conductive materials are used. They are applied between the housing and the modules and constantly cause the resulting heat to dissipate, thanks to their thermally conductive properties. Batteries can only keep their operating temperature at a constant level this way, achieving maximum performance.

Thermally conductive materials are dual-component silicone or polyurethane that are processed using a special dispensing system. So that the heat dissipates, they contain a high percentage of fillers. This is why the materials are highly abrasive and the components of the metering and mixing system have to be fitted with special tungsten-carbide coatings. This avoids excessive wear.
